10. Princeton Class of 1861: Baseball Nine. During the Civil War the Nassau Baseball Club of the College of New Jersey (later renamed Princeton) adopted the rules of the New York game, largely because of the influence of students from Brooklyn. Used with permission of Princeton University Library, University Archives. Department of Rare Books and Special Collections.
Encouraged by their victories over the former champions of New Jersey, over the next two years the Nassaus challenged several of the most prominent clubs of Philadelphia, Newark, New York, and Brooklyn. In May of 1863 a trip to Philadelphia produced a defeat by the Athletics but a win over the Olympics. In late September the Princetonians gained revenge against the Athletics with a 29–13 victory, played on a hilly field, which, according to a Philadelphia newspaper, “No one but a topographical engineer could describe.” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Saturday of the game was “a gala day in the college world of Princeton,” and the undergraduates were “most distressingly attacked by that very prevalent disease, in this mild foretaste of an Indian summer weather—Baseball on the brain.” Even more impressive was a vacation week trip to Brooklyn in October, when the Nassau nine defeated the Resolutes, Excelsiors, and Stars, losing only to the mighty Atlantics. The visit turned out to be a satisfying homecoming for many of the students who were natives of Brooklyn. Their performance earned high praise from the Clipper, whose reporter noted: “They have done what no other club has done that has ever visited the Metropolis before, viz: won three out of four games with Brooklyn Clubs.” After the school year ended in June of 1864 the Nassau club toured the greater New York City metropolitan region in early July, scoring victories over the Mutuals of New York and the Stars of Brooklyn, but losing to the Atlantics and the Eurekas of Newark.
